Stallone plays LA cop Joe Bomowski, confirmed slob, who finds his life disrupted when his bossy mom Tutti (Getty) comes to visit: she regales strangers with mollycoddle stories, does housework at 3am, and interferes in his thriller (with JoBeth Williams). After witnessing a murder, Tutti becomes embroiled in the subsequent investigation, dispensing wisecracks and threatening the villain (Rees) with a safe rattling. Most of the hold responsible in requital for this unimaginative effort can be attributed to the screenplay, but Spottiswoode’s mud-flats direction doesn’t help. He seems to have given up on his actors: Stallone merely goes through the motions, while Getty suffers when deprived of the ensemble playing and sharper writing offered on TV’s The Sparkling Girls.
